Find your flies

To begin with, the flies that I tie and sell are mostly meant for fish such as brown trout, sea run brown trout, rainbow trout, char and grayling in coastal waters, streams, lakes and ponds. Many of them will work phenomenally for other species such as perch, chub, panfish and bass as well. If you are looking to fish for any of these species you will find flies that work. Not sure? Ask us on Instagram!

Assuming that you are looking for flies to catch brown trout or rainbow trout I suggest simply starting with either the Essentials Box or the Nymph Box - these two offers flies that give you options in most waters. If you are still curious and need some help to browse the general selection - see below for more information!

EXPLANATION OF THE GENRES OF FLIES

A. Streamers
Streamers are flies that are a bit bigger compared to the “average” fly. They could imitate small minnows but the ones presented on this page are more likely to generate bites simply by looking like a tasty mouthful to the fish. Remember, fish have to put things they are curious about in their mouth to examine them, so flies with a lot of movement can spark interest even if they don’t really look like anything special! Effective flies that often works but sometimes can be a bit too big and then you might want a nymph.

B. Nymphs
Small sinking flies that imitates insects in their nymph/larva stadium. Most often in muted tones and small sizes to look similar to the insects. Often they are given some highlight to make them stand out from the crowd of “real” nymphs. Sometimes, it can however feel like there is no way that the fish can see your nymph and then you might want a “nymph”.

C. “Nymphs”
These are not real nymphs as they do not really imitate anything natural, but they are smaller than streamers. They attract bites by color and movement and can be perfect when a nymph doesn’t spark the interest of the fish but a streamer is a bit too much.

D. Baitfish
These are flies specifically made to look like small fish that larger fish eat. They are great choices for larger brown trout, sea run brown trout and perch but not really a beginner fly in my opinion.

E. Saltwater
Here I have put flies that are mainly intented for saltwater use. These are what you should go for if you are fishing for sea run brown trout or sea bass. They will also work in fresh water but I just tend to separate them out of habit.

F. Boobies
These are floating flies that have gotten their name from the styrofoam eyes that gives them buoyancy. They are fished on a sinking line to create a very special movement that is truly deadly for stocked trout and rainbow trout in still waters. It is not as universal as the first three categories but if you are looking to fish for stocked fish in ponds this can be an excellent option for you!

G. Curated Boxes
In these boxes I have chosen a few flies that, depending on your situation, should present you with a very high rate of succes. It also gives you some different options that can help you find what you like and need so that you can come back and find more options similar to that one.
